Shelley Free was born and raised in rural Oklahoma, moving to the Tulsa metro area in adulthood. Shelley graduated from Tulsa Community College then advanced to Oklahoma State University to pursue a degree in political science with a double in sociology. Her coursework focused on organizational politics and social movements. While pursuing her bachelor’s degree, Shelley was a full time Deputy Sheriff for Tulsa County. After a line of duty assault, surgery, and therapy, Shelley left the sheriff’s office and briefly served as a Lighthorse for Muscogee-Creek Nation. During legalization efforts, Shelley used her platform as a law enforcement officer to advocate for cannabis decriminalization though speaking engagements in conservative areas of Oklahoma, specifically educating on implementation and regulatory oversight. She has worked within the movement to foster positive relationships and promote best practices.
